How to Estimate Your Flooring Project

Follow these expert steps to ensure accurate material orders and avoid budget surprises.

01

Measure Exact Dimensions

Measure the widest points of length and width in your room. For irregular or L-shaped rooms, divide the floor space into simple rectangular sections.

02

Add Waste Margin

Always order 5% to 15% extra material. Cutting planks to fit corners, angled walls, or pattern layouts leaves unusable offcuts.

03

Calculate Full Boxes

Flooring materials are sold in sealed cartons/boxes. Always round up your total needed square footage to the nearest full box coverage.

04

Account for Trim & Subfloor

Don’t forget perimeter baseboards, doorway transition strips, and underlayment padding that protects against moisture and sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions regarding flooring estimates and purchasing.

We recommend ordering 10% extra for standard rectangular rooms laid with straight planks. For diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with many alcoves and pillars, order 15% extra to account for cut waste.
Yes! Always keep 1 full unopened box plus extra cut planks in attic or closet storage. If a plank gets damaged or stained years later, you can replace individual planks without needing to replace the entire floor.
Standard labor fees cover subfloor inspection, laying the underlayment, cutting and locking planks/tiles into place, and cleaning up. Extra services like old floor removal, furniture moving, or subfloor leveling may incur additional charges.
If your LVP or laminate planks feature a pre-attached foam acoustic pad, you do not need additional cushioning underlayment. However, installing over concrete subfloors still requires a thin 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier film.
